Ghosts of Ridgefield

Get ready for a spooktacular time at the Keeler Tavern’s guided walk on Friday, October 23 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, October 24 at 5 pm with Timothy Keeler!
On this guided walk of Timothy Keeler’s Haunt, visitors will meet some of the ghosts of Ridgefield’s past from across three centuries going back to its founding days in early 1700.

These ghosts came from all walks of life, some wealthy and influential, others from the fringes of society. But all left their mark on our town’s history and their stories live on forever. This is the time to hear their voices and meet them — in the flesh!

Dress warmly and wear appropriate shoes; we have uneven walkways. Your guide will carry a flashlight to lead the way. Parking is at the First Congregational Church, 103 Main Street, Ridgefield, CT 06877, across the street from our campus. Please exercise caution when crossing the street.

Check-in 5 minutes before the start of your tour at the Keeler Tavern Visitor Center, 152 Main Street, Ridgefield, CT 06877. The tour will last about 75 minutes. Restroom facilities are available only at the start of the tour.

Tours will start promptly. We will not be able to accommodate late arrivals.
Appropriate for families with children ages 7+.We will run this program unless torrential rainstorms ensue. The tickets are $10 and can be purchased by clicking here.

Spooktacular Witch’s Dungeon!

This will be the 55th season for the annual Witch’s Dungeon Halloween Classic Movies Museum in Bristol, the longest-running exhibition of its kind started in 1966. This wax style museum is a tribute to the actors and make-up artists that gave audiences classic movie monsters. A highlight of the event is the guest appearance of Argyle Goolsby (musician Steve Matthews) plus the screening of the Mel Brooks classic movie, Young Frankenstein on real film at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 25.

The Graveyard Of Classic Ghouls sets the atmosphere as you enter the dungeon where accurate life-size figures of Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi, and others are featured in 13 scenes or dioramas based on the vintage movie chillers. Many of the figures are made from the actual life casts of the actor’s faces, plus some original costumes or props, in a wax museum style setting with special voice tracks by Vincent Price, Mark Hamill, and John Agar. Many Hollywood props are on display and vintage films will be shown in the auditorium on “real” film until 10 p.m.

While waiting for each wax museum tour, you can view actual film props, actor’s life casts and movie posters, or step into our film room, to view classic silent horror movies, shown on film, not video. Featuring far more life-size figures & original movie props than we have ever had on display before! Figures based on the classic films of Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi and more.

The location for Witches Dungeon is 98 Summer Street in Bristol at the Bristol Historical Society. The hours are weekends in October, Friday through Sunday evenings, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Oct. 25-27 and Oct. 31- Nov. 3. The Museum is not recommended for children under age 7. Haunted Lantern Stroll in Bridgeport Oct. 24

The Barnum Museum is offering a “Wicked Lantern Stroll” on Thursday, October 24 at 7 p.m.with historian and author, Michael Bielawa. Stroll through the streets of Bridgeport to unravel the mysteries that this vibrant city hides – especially during the Halloween season.  Bielawa is versed in the paranormal and specializes in the study of New England’s shadowy past.

This slightly macabre tour, whose tales are based in fact, is perfect for Halloween jitters and thrills!  Participants will visit scenes of suspected hauntings, Victorian-era murders and unexplained phenomena. These sites are so centrally located and close to one another that they will give you the shivers! 

The walk begins in the People’s United Bank Gallery located at the rear of the Barnum Museum on 820 Main Street in Bridgeport. Tickets should be purchased in advance and are $10 per person for Barnum Museum Members and $20 for non-members. Make sure to bring your camera along to document the area’s paranormal activity!  After the walk, participants are invited to the museum for cider and refreshments. On October 27, Bridgeport’s Beardsley Zoo located on 1875 Noble Ave., is hosting a spooktacular afternoon that includes harvest hayrides and many other seasonal enjoyments from 12:00pm – 3:00pm. Special scarecrows are guaranteed to delight and fright all visitors to the Zoo adding a ghoulish flair. Make sure you are on hand to congratulate the winner of this years scarecrow contest…a perfect photo opportunity. Stamford’s Heckscher Farm, at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center on 39 Scofieldtown Rd., is hosting the annual ICK Fest on October 27 from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Children of all ages are invited to don their Halloween costume and head up to Heckscher Farm to trick or treat with their favorite farm friends! Be sure to grab a map and head off in search of different “treats” at the trick or treating stations around Heckscher Farm. See what Dakota the Clydesdale, the farm’s calves Moose and Monty, and the farms new little piglets have to offer. Then, celebrate all things creepy and crawly at the annual “Ick Fest” at the Overbrook Nature Center building where you can visit with the center’s snakes, tarantulas, lizards, worms and other animals! Don’t miss the slime table! Activities of the day include making bats and spiders and even a photo opportunity with one of the center’s snakes. Don’t forget your treat bag. All Aboard

Once again this year, the festively decorated Railroad Museum of New England in Thomaston is scheduling Halloween Weekend train rides on its vintage trains on Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27 at Noon and 2:00 PM from Thomaston Station. Take a ride to the Pumpkin Patch aboard the Naugatuck Railroad, costumes welcome! During the ride, you may stretch your legs and choose your pumpkin in the Naugy’s own pumpkin patch, one per child as long as the supply lasts. Re-board the train for a fun and scenic one hour and 15 minute train ride that runs along the Naugatuck River south to Waterbury and north to spectacular Thomaston Dam amid splendid fall foliage across the Litchfield Hills. Small Town Fun

The 20th Annual Halloween on the Green in Danbury will take place on Saturday, October 26 from 2 pm to 4pm with a Costume Parade scheduled for 3:30 pm. Prizes will be awarded for Most Original, Scariest, Cutest and Funniest get-ups. Children will have their own costume parade and games. The New Cannan Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the annual Halloween Parade, on October 27 at 12 -noon rain or shine. Kids are invited to meet at 12 p.m, in the Park Street Parking Lot where goodie bags will be given out at this free event until they run out! At 1 p.m. children are invited to participate in the 32nd. Annual Halloween Parade that loops down Elm Street to Main Street and back. Vehicular traffic is closed for this fun-filled event.

On October 26, Rain date Oct. 27, Plymouth is holding a PumpkinFest on the Green, 10 Park Street from 4 to 7 p.m. Bring your carved jack-o-lantern to enter the carving contest prizes will be awarded. At 6 p.m. all the pumpkins will be lit for a spectacular display. Other event activities include face painting, live music, lantern tours of the old burying ground and a costume parade led by a bagpiper.

Everyone is invited to join the 37th Annual Kent Pumpkin Run on October 27th. The festivities begin with a Kids Fun Run at 11:15 AM followed by the 5 mile run / walk at noon. The spectator friendly certified course starts and finishes at Kent Green in front of Town Hall. Festivities include music, refreshments (including Billy’s famous Pumpkin Soup!), face painting, Halloween fun and much more.

5th Annual Washington Green Cemetery Tour Oct. 26

The 5th Annual Washington Green Cemetery Tour, with a special Gunnery theme, will take place on Friday October 26th from 6:30-8:30pm.

Costumed guides will lead groups of visitors every ten minutes from the Gunn Museum to the Washington Green Cemetery where the town’s departed citizens will be stationed at their gravestones to tell their tales of tragedy and triumph.

Tour groups will follow a path of 1,000 luminaries spanning a quarter of a mile through the shadowy cemetery and will hear the dramatic experiences of past students and faculty from the Gunnery.

Features of this magical theatrical evening will include tales of murder, town controversies, the Titanic disaster, Civil War soldiers, abolitionists and more. This event is not to be missed!

Tours depart every ten minutes from the museum and last about 45 minutes, bring a flashlight. Complimentary refreshments will be served in the Gunn Library. While this event is free, donations are greatly appreciated. The rain date is Sunday October 28.

Sharon Audubon Enchanted Forest and Kids’ Day Oct. 20 & 28

The Enchanted Forest…meet a Bear….

Family fun is in the works at the Sharon Audubon Center the last two weekends in October. Both events are “non scary” and geared toward families with children pre-K through 2nd grade.

The Audubon’s popular Enchanted Forest will be held on Saturday, October 20th. Guided groups will meet friendly costumed animal characters along a candlelit trail and hear how the animals live their lives on the Audubon grounds. After the tour, which lasts approximately 45 minutes, participants can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate inside the Center building before taking a hayride back to the parking area. This non-scary program is ideal for children up to 8 years old and their families. Tours begin every 10-15 minutes between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00pm. Participants should bring an extra flashlight. Admission is $4 per person. Children under 2 are free.

Kids Day at the Sharon Audubon Center

Audubon Kids’ Day is taking place on Sunday, October 28th from 12-3pm. This is a fun, autumn afternoon for young children and their families and features brand new carnival-type games for 2012, kids’ crafts, live animals from “The Nature of Things,” a haybale maze, haywagon rides, professional face painting with glitter tattoos and food. Children are encouraged to come in costume and join in the costume parade around the Center grounds at 2:30. The event is held rain or shine. Admission is $7.00 per carload.
