FAMILY FUN IS GUARANTEED, RAIN OR SHINE IN LITCHFIELD HILLS AND FAIRFIELD COUNTY

When the beach outing or the picnic is rained out, what to do with restless kids on a wet summer weekend? Plenty of possibilities await in Western Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills and Fairfield County, where special indoor exhibits from bats to dinosaurs to a working carousel are guaranteed to bring smiles. Families can join a workshop learning how to make their own clocks or even have a “stay-cation” at a resort with an indoor water park.

In Norwalk, the Maritime Aquarium is featuring Africa: From the Desert to the Sea, starring amazing creatures from exotic fish to adorable meerkats, geckos and awesome giant boas. Playful meerkats are a favorite, and special windows allow following them into their underground burrows. A viewing bubble even lets young visitors stand up right among the meerkats. www.maritimeaquarium.org.

Not far away in Norwalk at the Stepping Stones Museum for Children, Dinosaur Revolution, a special exhibit through September 8, lets youngsters uncover fossils and facts about dinosaurs as they navigate a giant maze. www.steppingstonesmuseum.org

The Stamford Museum and Nature Center has a new exhibit through September 2 called Masters of the Night, starring bats, those mysterious and often misunderstood mammals. Visitors can try out a variety of fun and informative interactive stations featuring life-like models, such as “Bat Ears,” “Feast in Flight,” and the “Echo – Echo Unit.” www.stamfordmuseum.org.

In Greenwich, Eggs-hibition: Unscrambling Their History at the Bruce Museum through October 20 promises to enthrall all with its array of bird eggs, edible eggs, and eggs both ugly and beautiful. www.brucemuseum.org.

LITCHFIELD HILLS TREATS

A ride on an old-fashioned merry-go-round is a treat for all ages, and it is included in the price of admission at the Carousel Museum in Bristol. This unique museum offers one of largest collections of antique carousel pieces in the country in its “Golden Age of the Carousel” exhibit. Visitors also see the workshop where antique carousel creations are restored. Upstairs, a Museum of Fire history awaits and the museum includes a changing art gallery and a children’s craft center, as well. www.thecarouselmuseum.org.

Waterbury’s Timexpo: The Timex Museum is a fascinating place for older kids with its Time Tunnel and a colorful history of watch making. Fun for all is the museum’s Make A Clock workshops offered every Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Workshop participants choose among many designs, decorate and assemble their own working clock. http://timexpo.com.

Waterbury also offers a unique splurge solution for a rainy weekend. It is always 84 degrees and sunny at the Coco Key Water Resort and Conference Center, where a 50,000 square foot indoor water playground offers an Adventure River, water slides, raft rides, activity pools with water basketball and the Parrot’s Perch Interactive Play Island with a special shallow Kiddie Entry Area. Sharon Audubon Festival in Litchfield Hills

The Sharon Audubon located on Rte. 4 in the bucolic hamlet of Sharon Connecticut is hosting its’ 46th annual Audubon Festival on August 10 and 11. Gates to the festival open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 5:30 p.m. each day. Admission to the event is $5 per person or $20 per car load.

The Audubon Festival that takes place in the northwest corner of the Litchfield Hills features fun and interactive ways families can learn about nature. The staff of the Audubon have scheduled two full days of nature walks and programs, live animal presentations, and children’s activities that will engage kids and teach them about nature in addition to food, music, exhibits and a select number of vendors.

Scheduled programs such as Exploring Bog Meadow by Canoe, a Tree Identification Walk, Swarming Behavior of Honey Bees, Bird Banding, making Pressed Flower Bookmarks and much more will take place at 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. each day. The Festival will also host a number of ongoing activities such as the children’s Merry Marsh Activity Tent.

There will be two keynote presentations that will take place each day that is perfect for everyone whether they are a seasoned naturalist or a young explorer. At 1:00pm on Saturday, storyteller Eshu Bumpus will present his engaging “Folktales,” sure to please young and old alike. A highlight of the day will take place at 3:30 p.m. when there will be a falconry demonstration by Brian Bradley of Skyhunters in Flight.

On Sunday, at 1 p.m. “Nature Nick’s Animal Adventures that feature 10-12 animals from all corners of the world will entertain festivalgoers. The grand finale of the festival will be an appearance by Atka the Wolf from Wolf Conservation Center at 3:30 p.m.

New England Carousel Museum offers workshops for kids July and August

New this year, the New England Carousel Museum located on 95 Riverside Ave. in Bristol is hosting workshops for kids that are fun and educational too. The workshops run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and even include snacks! Kids are asked to bring their own-bagged lunch. The workshop cost is $25 a day; sibling and multiple class discounts are available. On August 2, in a workshop called, Drawing About the Museum, kids will explore a variety of drawing mediums using the Carousel Museum collection as inspiration. Morgan, from The Art Truck, will teach techniques for using various materials, such as watercolor pencils, pastels, and more! Kids are asked to please wear old clothes or bring an art shirt. This workshop is for children ages 7-14.

Firefighter Day is offered for children ages 7 – 9 on July 23 or August 8. If you children have ever wondered what it is like to be a fireman, this workshop is for them. Kids will find out about firefighting through the ages alongside Museum staff and members of the Bristol Fire Department. Explore real equipment and tour the Fire Safety House simulation.

A unique Carving workshop is being offered on July 30 or August 1 for children ages 9-14. During this workshop kids will learn to carve with an instructor from the CT Wood Carvers Association. A highlight of this is the instruction on important carving safety rules and carving techniques, including soap carving and mallet and gauge carving. Kids will gain inspiration from the carousel horses and rounding boards in the galleries of the museum, and create their own projects to take home!

The last workshop is titled Painting Landscapes for the Carousel and is offered Aug. 6 or Aug. 15 and is for children ages 7-14. Kids will learn that there is more to carousel art than pretty ponies. Most carousels include beautiful landscapes and scenes of everyday life surrounding the inner workings of the machinery. In this workshop, a certified art teacher will guide children in designing and painting their own scenery panel. Children will go home with a framed masterpiece ready to hang on the wall. Please wear old clothes or bring an art shirt.

Fashion Week at Fairfield Museum

Fashionistas mark your calendars now for a behind-the-scenes preview of the new exhibition, In Vogue: A Runway of Vintage Fashion, with museum Curator Casey Lewis, followed by Lunch by SoNo Bakery and a Fashion Show by Fairfield designer Jennifer Butler. View highlights from Butler’s fall 2013 collection, which draws inspiration from fashion elements of the past.

Featuring pieces pulled directly from the Museum’s 100-year-old collection — one of the most comprehensive in Western Connecticut–In Vogue: A Runway of Vintage Fashion, will feature the fashion-forward women of Fairfield throughout the Colonial, Regency, Edwardian and Victorian Eras from 1780 to 1920. On view from July 18, 2013 – Jan. 5, 2014, the exhibit will showcase fashion trends of the past such as cage hoop skirts, bustles and gigot sleeves so large a woman could barely turn their heads.

One highlight is a 1781 blue silk damask wedding gown worn by 14-year old Lucy Nichols who married Fairfield Reverend Philo Shelton on April 15, 1781. “White was not worn in weddings until Queen Victoria wore a white gown in her 1840 wedding to Prince Albert,” notes Casey Lewis, curator. Exquisite hats, shoes and vintage prints from Godey’s Ladies magazine, Vogue and other fashion publications from 1850-1910 are also on display.

Darien SideWalk Sales and Family Fun Days 2013

Darien is a lovely seaside community located on Fairfield County’s “gold coast” in the southwest corner of Connecticut. Every year, the Darien Chamber of Commerce holds the annual Sidewalk Sales & Family Fun Day. This year, the long anticipated Sidewalk Sale will take place on Thursday, Friday & Saturday, July 11-13, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Live bands, kids toys and bargains galore rain or shine are highlights of this fun family event.

This popular sales event features Darien merchants exhibiting along the Post Road and at the Goodwives and Noroton Heights Shopping Centers. This event is perfect for treasure hunters and bargain hunters because discounts of up to 70% can be found here. A special highlight of this event will take place on Saturday, July 13th, when Day Street will be closed to vehicular traffic permitting participants stroll around the event safely and enjoy the bargains, shade and hanging flower baskets while kids have a blast on the children’s inflatables.

There will be children’s entertainment on Thursday, July 11 with a toy on the Post Road, and face painters at First County Bank. On Friday, July 12, there will be children’s entertainment including Home Run Challenge in Noroton Heights, in front of William Pitt Sotheby’s Int’l Realty, on Day Street and behind First County Bank & 1020 Post Road and live music in Gofer Plaza. In addition to this fun, the Uncle’s Hot Dog Cart will be in front of the Darien Fire Department and the Fire Truck will be out for children to enjoy. There will also be a visit from the Blue Fish Mascot that will entertain shoppers of all ages.

On Saturday, July 13, in addition to the bargains to be found, there will be a face painter in Noroton Heights near Edward Tunick, BB the Bluefish Mascot, Zumba for the Family, an inflatable slide on Day Street (which will be closed to vehicular traffic), a huge inflatable Back Yard Obstacle Course behind First County Bank., and free balloons in Goodwives Shopping Plaza for the children to enjoy. Summer Concerts at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk

Summer nights in Norwalk mean music by the Sound, and there is no better place to enjoy a concert as the sunsets than at Calf Pasture Beach. In addition to music, four concert evenings begin with a classic car show organized by The Coachmen for several hundred-car buffs from throughout the tri-state area.

On July 3, Norwalk will celebrate its annual Independance Day Celebration (rain date July 5). Dance to the Music with DJ Nuxxo opens Shady Beach entertainment at 6 p.m. and family fun at Calf Pasture Beach starts at 5:30 p.m. with The Amazing Andy Show. Bill Genuario, one of the most popular vocalists in the tri-state area, headlines at 8:00 p.m. at Shady Beach. He will be joined by his band, Destiny, which includes Tommy Hartlett (keyboard and vocals), Linda Fakundiny (guitar/vocals), Johnny Mennonna (bass guitar) and Ron Nihoff (drums). Parking will be available at Calf Pasture Beach only.

On July 10 at 6:30 p.m. concertgoers will enjoy Curious Creatures, a hands on exhibit of exotic animals followed by Scarborough Fair. With voices that blend effortlessly into that Simon & Garfunkel signature sound, brothers Jeb and Jock Guthrie pay tribute to the famous musical duo.

A Classic Car Show beginning at 6:00 p.m. on July 17 is followed by the music of The Royal Kings. This musical ensemble features vocalists Joey Bennett, Douglas Dorsey, Timmy Hayes, Tommy Talercio and Richard “Cookie” Thomas. These performers have opened for headlining acts from the 50s, 60s and 70s that include Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Little Anthony, AWB and the Flamingos. They continue to perform on the Oldies Rock and Roll circuit, as well as concerts and special events, and have two CDs, “Dreamin’ Through the Years” and “Dreamin’ at Christmas.”

The final July concert on July 24 headlines Fleetwood Macked at 7 p.m. This tribute band recreates the musical experience of Fleetwood Mac’s most popular line-up — Mick Fleetwood (Frank Saitta), John and Christine McVie (Bobby Trombley and Sue Rowe), Stevie Nicks (Hillary Epstein) and Lindsey Buckingham (Mike Epstein).

Each Wednesday night throughout the summer, area residents look forward to packing a picnic and a blanket and heading to the beach to enjoy a relaxing evening of music beside Long Island Sound.
